In the technical textile sector, carbon and graphene currently represent innovative solutions for enhancing the performance of mattress fabrics, particularly in terms of thermal regulation and antistatic properties.

However, communication regarding these components must be handled transparently and in full compliance with European regulations, as certain claims may lead to misunderstanding.

Regulatory Framework

Regulation (EU) No. 1007/2011, which governs textile fiber names and labeling of fiber composition, establishes that carbon and graphene are not classified as textile fibers, but rather as functional additives incorporated into the yarn or polymer matrix.

For this reason, they cannot be declared as fibrous components (in %) in technical datasheets or product labels, and must instead be communicated as technological features of the product.

Only officially recognized textile fibers (e.g., polyester, polypropylene, etc.) may be included in the percentage composition declaration.

Separation Between Labeling and Technical Information

Mandatory labeling indicates only the fiber composition (%) in full compliance with EU regulation and does not include carbon or graphene.

Technical and commercial information highlights the presence of carbon-or graphene-based additives and is communicated through technical datasheets, delivery documents, and marketing materials.

At Stellini, the composition is always declared in compliance with EU regulations, excluding carbon and graphene percentages. Their presence is instead specified separately as functional additives.

Definitions

A textile fiber is defined as a material that is spinnable, convertible into yarn, and used as a structural element of the fabric. Only fibers listed in Annex I of the Regulation are officially recognized.

Carbon and graphene are not included and therefore are not considered textile fibers.

From a regulatory and technical perspective, they are functional additives, fillers embedded in the polymer matrix, or part of a technological treatment or modification of the yarn.

Technical and Commercial Communication

Examples of compliant wording include:
– Polyester yarn enhanced with graphene/carbon
– Fabric made with graphene-or carbon-enhanced yarn
– Graphene/carbon technology integrated into the yarn
– Presence of graphene/carbon-based additives to improve performance

Regulation allows additional information provided it is accurate and not misleading.

This approach enhances the innovative value of the product while avoiding ambiguity in fiber composition labeling and ensuring full regulatory compliance. Proper communication reflects industrial integrity, reliability, and transparency.
